Martiau, Nicholas (b. ABT 1591, d. AFT 1 MAR 1657/58)
Note: Nicholas Maritau was a French Protestant and was naturalized in England before sailing for Virginia in the spring of 1620 on board the Francis Bonaventure as one of two agents for the Earl of Huntington.

In 1622, he led a company of soldiers up the James River to the iron works--the first industrial enterprise in the North American colonies--that had been destroyed in the Indian massacre of that year.

In 1623, as a member of the House of Burgesses, he signed the draft of the First Laws, the first legal code established in the North American colonies. He was elected to the House of Burgesses again in 1632. And served as a justice in York County, often holding court in his own house.

He patented 1300 acres on the York River on Mar 14 1639/40, claiming 600 acres as due him for transporting himself and his wife and ten others to the area, and 700 acres for transporting fourteen people to the colony.

His will contained a proviso freeing two slaves and giving them each an allotment of land.
