Haviland, Matthew (b. 15 JUN 1550, d. 11 MAR 1619)

Note: Matthew Haviland was born in Poole, in Dorset, and settled in Bristol, where he was a most successful merchant and where he served as Lord Mayor in 1607-08. He was Master of the Society of Merchants in 1616 and served as an Alderman until his death.

Besides property in Bristol (his mansion in Small Street was still standing as of 1916), he held lands in Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, and Co. Somerset.

He was a committed Protestant and wrote a curious poem to celebrate the victory over the Spanish Armada in 1588, and the defeat of the plot of Guy Fawkes in 1605:

A Monument of
GOD's Most gracious preservation of England from
Spanish Invasion, Aug. 2, 1588, and Popish
Treason, Novem. 5, 1605.

To my Posterity.

God's ancient Church two solemn feasts did keep,
On two set days, by his own Word directed.
When Pharao's Hoste was drowned in the deep,
And proud Haman's treason were detected.

Two works of equall grace, but greater wonder,
The Lord hath done for us, past all man's reason;
When papists did atempt to bring us under,
By Spanish huge army and damn'd Percie's treason.

I, and my house these great things will remember,
And in remembrance sanctifie two days,
In August one, the other in November;
Both made by God, for us to give him praise.

Dear Children, charge your children after you
Still to observe these feasts as I now do.
