Note: William Cornwall appears on John Eliot's list of the members of his church in Roxbury, Massachusetts, in 1633, along with his first wife. In 1635 he joined the "great removal" to the Connecticut River valley and settled at Hartford. In 1637 he was one of thirty-seven soldiers supplied by Hartford for the war against the Pequot Indians. His houselot in Hartford amounted to eight acres (located near the present north end of Village Street). In the records of this piece of land, dating to Febraury 1639, he is spoken of as "William Cornwell, Sergeant at Arms."
He and his second wife, the mother of all his children, moved to Middletown about 1650 and were among the founders of that town. He owned fifteen acres at the intersection of present- day Main and Washington Streets as well as an additional nine hundred acres in Middletown and "a great lot over the Great River." In 1666 he received further grants of land for his service in the Pequot War.
He and his family joined the church in Middletown on Dec 3 1668. He was a representative to the colonial legislature for Middletown in 1654, 1664, and 1665. He also served as constable in 1664. On Jul 10 1668 he joined the church at Middletown and in 1670 he was assessed at 160 pounds, one of the largest assessments among the fifty-two householders in the town. He left an estate valued at 231 pounds.
The often-repeated assertion that he served as a sargeant in the bodyguard of King Charles I before becoming a Puritan and emigrating to Massachusetts is without documentary foundation.
