Note: Thomas Leffingwell moved to Norwich with his father in 1660, at the founding of the town. He was made a freeman in 1671 and served as a representative to the General Court.
He was listed as a sergeant in the list of freeman drawn up in 1700, but he is described as an ensign on his wife's tombstone.
His house was being used as an "ordinary" in 1700. This would, one would think, mean that he was at best middle class, but, in fact, it was a considerable privilege to be granted a license to "entertain strangers." It was undoubtedly profitable as well, and certainly Thomas Leffingwell was one of the richest men in town. At his death he left an estate of L9793/9/4, a vast sum for that time.
His tombstone reads:
HERE LYES YE BODY
of Mr. THOMAS LEFFINGWELL
Decest March ye 5, 1724
and in ye 75 year of
his age
