Pauncefote, Richard (b. ABT 1512, d. 20 DEC 1558)

Note: Richard Pauncefaute adhered to the Old Religion, as did the rest of the family. During the reign of Queen Mary he was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1554 and in 1557 was appointed a Justice of Oyer and Terminer. He died early in 1559, only a few weeks after Queen Mary herself died.

His son and heir, John, harried for his Catholicism, withdrew to the continent in 1584. His son Richard would in 1598 sell the manor of Hasfield that had been the seat of the family for four hundred years.

Note: Sir Ralph Hastings was a Yorkist like his elder brother, and profited accordingly during the reign of King Edward IV. With his elder brother Sir William Hastings, soon Lord Hastings, he was made constable of Rockingham. On June 30, 1461, he was made keeper of the Lions in the Tower of London, receiving twelve pence a day in salary.

He was made Squire of the Body, receiving fifty marks a year and served as constable of Northampton castle and keeper of Brigstock Park during this period. On May 1 1462 he was granted Harrowden manor in Northamptonshire that had been forfeited by Sir William Vaux, who was a Lancastrian. He served as Justice of the Peace for Northamptonshire from 1463 to 1470 and Sheriff in 1466-67.

He accompanied Edward IV into exile in 1470 and returned with him to fight for him at Barnet and Tewksbury, where he was knighted on May 5 1471. He again served as Sheriff of Northamptonshire in 1471 and was made a knight of the Body and of the Shire and was restored as Justice of the Peace. He served in Parliament from 1472 to 1475. In 1474 he was appointed lieutenant and then captain of Guisnes in France.

He lost most of his offices when Richard III usurped the throne (murdering Hastings's elder brother in the process). Richard III pardoned him on Aug 18 1483 and restored him to his office as Knight of the Body and again made him Captain of Guisnes on Mar 4 1484.

With the accession of King Henry VII he again lost most of his offices, but remained a Knight of the Body and received a pension of ten pounds a year.

When a priest who had been chaplain of his household went over to the conspiracy of Perkin Warbeck, one of the pretenders to the throne that bedevilled Henry VII's reign, Hastings was lucky to escape being charged with treason, although there is no evidence that he was involved in any way.
