Note: Jonathan Amory was born in County Somerset but was orphaned at an early age and was raised in Ireland by his brother Thomas, who had married a daughter of Lord Kerry, ancestor of the present Marquess of Lansdowne.
He was a merchant in Dublin for some time and then moved to the West Indies, where his brother Robert lived. He moved to Charleston about 1685, purchasing much property. He was elected to the legislature and soon named its speaker and was subsequently named Treasurer of the Province.
He died of yellow fever in 1699.
