Note: Captain Joseph McDowell fought under his cousin of the same name at the Battle of King's Mountain and captured some of the dinner service of the British commander, Colonel Patrick Ferguson, which has been preserved in the family ever since.
After the Revolution, he was a member of the state convention called to consider the new federal constitution. He opposed ratification largely on the grounds that the insturment lacked a bill of rights and helped to defeat it. He was afterwards four times elected to the state legislature and in 1793 was elected to Congress, tajking his seat on December 3rd, 1793. Ill health confined him to less than one term and he died in February, 1795.
For many years there was a controversy over whether it was he or his first cousin, Major Joseph McDowell, who commanded the Burke County militia at King's Mountain, but it is now clear, from the testimony of contemporaries at the battle, that it was his cousin who commanded.
McDowell County, North Carolina, was named in his honor.
