Booth, Lawrence (b. , d. 1480)
Note: Lawrence Booth went to Pembroke Hall in Cambridge where he studied civil and canon law, becoming a licentiate. In 1450 he was appointed master of his college, a post he would hold until his death, and later was appointed Chancellor of the University. During his residence at Cambridge, he started a movement for an arts school as well as a school of civil law.

Outside of Cambridge, his career advanced quickly. In 1449 he was named a prebendary of St. Paul's and on Nov 2 1456 he was named Dean of the Cathedral. He was also a prebendary at York and Lichfield.

But Booth's made activity was not in the church but in the government. He became Chancellor to Queen Margaret and, around 1456, Keeper of the Privy Seal, and that same year was appointed to the commission to extend the truce with Scotland. On Jan 28 he was appointed one of the tutors and guardians of the Prince of Wales.

On Sep 15 of that year he was appointed Bishop of Durham. While this was a very important ecclesiastical appointment, it was an equally important civil one, as the Bishop of Durham would exercise civil authority over a large area of northern England almost up to the reign of Queen Victoria. He continued as Privy Seal and negotiated a truce with the Scots in Sep 1459.

After the fall of Henry VI, Lawrence Booth, although a Lancastrian, accomodated himself to the new realities. Although he temporarily lost control of the Palatinate of Durham, he was restored to it in 1464, when he evidently made submission to King Edward IV. He thereafter took an active part in Edward's government and on Jul 27 1473 was made keeper of the Great Seal.

In 1476 he was translated to the Archbishopric of York in a ceremony of great splendor and solemnity, succeeding to the place his half brother had held until his death in 1464. He held the seat until his own death in 1480, when he was buried beside his brother in the collegiate church in Southwell, which both he and his brother had liberally endowed.
