Mainwaring, George (b. , d. 1571)

Note: George Mainwaring came south from Lancashire with his older brother Oliver, hoping to take advantage of the appointment of their kinsman, Nicholas Mainwaring, as Canon of Exeter Cathedral. Oliver farmed church tithes (in other words, he was a tax collector for the church, keeping all sums over and above a certain amount). George was named Bailiff of Polsloe Priory, a position he maintained after the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII.

Obviously both brothers prospered and in 1552 they, with others, obtained the lease on the dean and Chapter of the Chapel of St. Anne in Exeter. Six years later they rebuilt the chapel and founded a hospital for eight poor people.

After 1559, George Mainwaring was listed as a noted recusant.

Stoughton, Thomas (b. ABT 1557, d. ABT 1622)
Note: The Reverend Thomas Stoughton matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1573 but received his A.B. degree from Queens College in 1577. He was a fellow at Queens in 1579 and received his M.A. from there in 1580. He was ordained a deacon and priest at Lincoln in 1582.

He was rector of Naughton in Suffolk from 1586 until 1594, when he was deprived of that living. He was assistant minister at Burstead Magna, also in Suffolk, from 1594 until 1600, when he was named vicar of Great Coggeshall in Essex. He was deprived of that living as well, in 1606. He had been appointed to both livings by the 3rd Lord Rich (grandson of No. 453038), but his zealous Puritanism forced his removal. He was a member of the Dedham Classis, an organization of Puritan ministers in East Anglia, that met frequently to discuss ecclesiastical affairs and was a major force within it.

After losing his pulpit, he wrote pamphlets, including "To the Christian Readers," "The Dignitie of God's Children," "To the Nobility and Gentry of Great Britain," "Two Profitable treatises," and "The Christian's Sacrifice as set forth in Romans XII, 1 2."

Scudder, Henry (b. EST 1545, d. BEF 5 NOV 1595)
Note: Henry Scudder described himself in his will as a yeoman, which is to say someone who owns the land he works as a farmer. But he clearly was a prosperous one, owning more than just the land he lived on. He left his daughters five or ten pounds each and his children all received good educations.

Scudder, Henry (b. EST 1583, d. BEF 31 MAY 1652)
Note: The Reverend Henry Scudder matriculated at Cambridge in 1603 and received his M.A. from Christ's College in 1606. He was rector of Drayton, Oxfordshire, and in 1633, was presented by the King with the living Collingbourne-Ducis, Wiltshire. His first father-in-law, George Hunt, had been rector of Collingbourne for fifty years before him. George Hunt's father, John, had been sentenced to be burned at the stake for heresy during the reign of Queen Mary I.

Despite having been given a living by the King, Scudder was a Puritan through and through. he was among those summoned to the Westminster assembly of divines in June 1643, and the following year preached before the House of Commons at St. Margaret's in Westminster which sermon was printed by the request of the House.

Scudder was the author of many books including "The Christian's Daily Walke in Holy Securitie and Peace," a devotional work that would be issued again and again for the next two hundred years, last being printed in 1826. He also wrote "A Key of Heaven: the Lord's Prayer opened and applyed" in 1632, another devotional work that had wide acceptance long after his death.
